Descriptions

The examples given in these descriptions are for guidance only and are not an exhaustive list.

• Damp or wet (No Mould) – The item contains visible moisture, condensation, or wet patches when unpacked. This includes damp seams, zips, pockets, or folded sections that would prevent immediate repacking. Does not include items that have developed mould spores or mildew – those fall under the “with Mould” category.

• Damp or wet (with Mould) – The item has been left damp or wet for a prolonged period, resulting in visible mould growth, mildew, fungal staining, or a persistent musty odour that cannot be removed by simple airing. Examples include green/black spots on fabric, white powdery residue on straps, or a sour smell that remains after drying.

• Soiled (No Mould) – The item has been used but not cleaned out before return. Examples include: mud, grass, sand, or grit ground into fabric; food crumbs, sticky spillages, sweet residues, or drink marks on surfaces; grease or burnt-on food on stoves; or any debris that requires more than a light shake or wipe to remove. Does NOT include items that are dirty to the point of harbouring mould – those fall under “Soiled (with Mould)”.

• Soiled (with Mould) – The item is both heavily soiled AND has developed mould or mildew due to being packed away damp with organic matter (e.g., food, mud, grass). This requires deep cleaning, decontamination, and potentially specialist treatment. Examples: a tent packed wet with muddy footprints that has developed green/black spots; a sleeping bag with food stains and a musty smell; a rucksack with mouldy pockets from stored food wrappers.

• Missing parts – Any component that was provided with the hire item but is not returned. Examples include: tent pegs, poles, guy lines, stuff sacks, stove fuel bottles, pan lids, sleeping bag compression straps, or tracker charging cables. A minimum £10 administration fee applies per booking, plus the full replacement cost of the missing part(s).

• Damaged Parts – Any component that is returned broken, fractured, split, crushed, or otherwise unusable beyond normal wear and tear. Examples include: bent or snapped tent poles, torn fabric, ripped mesh, broken stove valves, delaminated rucksack straps, or cracked stove parts. Charge will be the cost of replacement part plus any fitting time (£15 per hour, minimum 30 minutes).
